Going Home
Mom sees the vet PRIOR to being bred to ensure good health and hips, and is given added raw meat, eggs and supplements to her diet to keep her healthy. Mom may be given an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy and a ROUGH puppy count. X-RAY radiation is TOXIC and should NOT be done unless there is an emergency! All our moms deliver NATURALLY, and once born started on extra supplements.
I try to do a live video of puppy birthing (if possible) on Facebook or YouTube. Puppies are naturally birthed (unless emergency c-section is needed), and each puppy is carefully toweled off, weighed and mouth suctioned. If needed I do throw them to stimulate breathing and heart beat. Puppy is placed on mom to nurse until next puppy begins birthing. When next puppy begins to arrive, prior puppies are pulled and put into an incubator to stay safe. Mom never has more than 2 puppies at a time nursing while she is in the birthing process. After she is done, all puppies are placed back on mom.
The first 10 days puppies are carefully watched and personality notes taken. YES, my assessments are VERY accurate at 0-10 days of age.
Mom is always allowed free choice of nursing, sleeping, eating or socializing with our family. She is NEVER LOCKED ANYWHERE.
At 2-3 weeks the large end of the puppy pen is opened for free play. Classical music or Praise and Worship music is played for the puppies during the day, this helps them calm down at their new homes too. Classical music helps their busy minds stay focused!
Mom usually weans them at 4 weeks. They prefer the cold turkey method but often I will force them to nurse once a day to help relieve pressure and prevent any mastitis. Pups are started on soaked dog food with goats milk and we begin natural worming methods.
At 5 weeks mom will no longer see her puppies unless she thinks something is hurting them. During this time, my older female will go down to visit the pups and nanny them. From 5-6 weeks pups transition over to solid food with a separate dish of goats milk 2x a day. This helps their ears stand. I begin working more on outside potty time and correct human play interaction. From 5-8 weeks old, pups teach EACH OTHER correct play behavior, biting hurts and learning social cues. While mom can visit them any time she wants, she usually chooses not to, and after 4 weeks all teaching is done by puppy siblings and myself.
From 6-8 weeks puppies learn the sit command, and behavior commands such as “no bite” and “down”. The puppy play yard allows them to develop strong muscles and joints and learn to navigate obstacles.
By 8 weeks they have a solid foundation for GOOD behavior and a solid personality!
Any puppy with a POTENTIAL birth defect, or otherwise unwell vettable condition sees the vet asap. Our vet is ONLY 5 minutes away. Puppies are naturally wormed and immune system strengthened using special supplements to help keep their systems functioning at PEAK condition. Fecal samples are professionally done at 7 weeks and any positive samples are re-tested a week later after litter treatment. Puppies receive their first round of vaccines and a vet check at 7 weeks old. Vet checks head to toe and heart/breathing, and notes ANY conditions found.
Really it depends on the dog mama and her comfort level, but generally 10 days of age or older is fine for adults, and 5 weeks or older for families with kids under the age of 8. We do ask for groups of more than 4 that you either rotate visitors in the puppy room (you are more than welcome to hang out upstairs and have snacks and drinks while you wait). By 6 weeks of age we CAN accommodate groups of 4-6 people in the puppy room. If your group is larger, we will work together to find a comfortable solution.
Starting at 14 days of age, puppies are started on potty training with a hay box. This hay is grown in our fields with NO chemicals – it’s the SAME GRASS all over our property and directly replicates the smell of outdoors. Starting at 5-6 weeks, puppies are introduced to the potty bell and going outside to potty. Our puppy room perfectly simulates a home, and puppies are worked with every 2 hours where they are let out to potty and allowed free roam of their puppy room – giving them the FREEDOM to make the RIGHT CHOICE on where to potty. This ENSURES they are 90-100% POTTY TRAINED by the time they go home! IT WORKS!
Puppies are started on basic commands such as “sit”, and taught NOT TO CHEW furniture, people or JUMP AND BITE faces. I am constantly working with them to ensure proper behavior when they go home.
Your puppy comes with a booklet from our vet with proof of their vaccinations and ANY medical anomalies the vet finds. Out of state puppies that fly will ALSO receive a microchip. All puppies come with a puppy take-home bag, filled with an assortment of toys and teethers, a 5lb bag of food, a fancy collar or bling AND a booklet with ALL the info on the parents (health and color testing as well as personality). You are also given a TRAINING AND CARE GUIDE SO PLEASE READ IT. It’s written JUST FOR YOU BY ME. Your puppy ALSO comes 90-100% potty trained!
Puppies can go home NO EARLIER than 8 weeks of age. This gives their vaccines a week to adjust in their bodies. REMEMBER – vaccines are only the start of immunity and a puppy can STILL GET SICK once taken home, so do not bring them in areas other dogs have been until they have had their 2nd round of shots. Any puppies held LONGER THAN 9 WEEKS will be charged an additional fee of $25/day so PLAN AHEAD WITH TRAVEL PLANS. *For information on WHY we send puppies home at 8-9 weeks, please see our Blog post.
YES! From time to time we DO have customers that feel MORE CONFORTABLE with their own vet administering meds or vaccines and we RESPECT YOUR CHOICE. Please let us know from DAY 1 that this is your plan! Your puppy will STILL be examined thoroughly by our vet and still come with an (empty) vaccine book. You WILL need to sign a waiver stating that you will be doing your own healthcare program at home.
